October 20, 2021 - Small and Simple

It has been said that the gospel of Jesus Christ is “simply beautiful and beautifully simple.” The world is not. It is complicated, complex, and filled with turmoil and strife. We are blessed as we exercise care not to allow complexity, so common in the world, to enter into the way we receive and practice the gospel. We should all strive to keep the gospel simple—in our lives, in our families, in our classes and quorums, and in our wards and stakes.

Elder Gary E. Stevenson, "Simply Beautiful—Beautifully Simple", General Conference, October 2021

I am immediately reminded of the phrase "small and simple things". Heavenly Father works that way. He uses small and simple things to bring about great things. Think of the Prophet Joseph Smith...he was unlearned teenage boy. He was simple but did he bring about great things?

Everything Christ did on earth was small and simple, catering to the "one", the individual. This includes His Atonement....although that wasn't small nor simple in my mind, He still did it for the one, yet He did it for every...one. Not only was that "great", it was the most important event in the history of the human race across worlds, not just ours. Yet, it was small in comparison, but not small nor simple in my finite mind.

The gospel is so simple that all we have to do is "look and live". All we need to do is follow the commandments, study scriptures, pray, pay tithing, and serve and love others. But...sometimes doing that is not so simple. We let life get in the way. We let Satan and his goons get in the way.

It's comforting to know that the Savior’s "yoke is easy" and His "burden is light". So we don't have to carry our heavy loads alone. Jesus Christ will carry them with us, many times for us....we just have to let Him.
