November 11, 2021 - Bondage

When pride has a hold on our hearts, we lose our independence of the world and deliver our freedoms to the bondage of men’s judgment. The world shouts louder than the whisperings of the Holy Ghost. The reasoning of men overrides the revelations of God, and the proud let go of the iron rod.

President Ezra Taft Benson, "Beware of Pride", General Conference, April 1989

On this very pensive day, focusing on the freedoms we enjoy as a people, and especially as a nation, and, of course, individually, we also focus on why those freedoms are important in the first place. Not because they allow us to do whatever we want, within the law, but because they are given from God. They are eternal. We've always had our free agency to pick this or that.

With His plan, we are free. We have agency to choose left or right, right or wrong, good or bad. He will not take that right away. In His plan, it is us that gives that right away by choosing the wrong. When we choose sin, we give up our agency and we are in bondage to Satan and his minions. When we choose pride, we choose that bondage. We, then, are slaves to the evil one to one degree or another.

Only Christ can break that bond and pull us back into His fold. Any bond, no matter how strong, is unmatched to His power.

But, again, we need to choose Him over the world for that to happen. We need to listen to His soft, quiet voice amidst the noise and shouting all around. We need to grasp the iron rod, and re-grasp if we've let go. God is waiting, encouraging, and pleading that we choose Him and His Christ.
