The armor of God is on the inside. It is faith in the word of God. Whether we are thinking of the helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit, the shield of faith, or the breastplate of righteousness, the strength and effectiveness of a person’s armor is dependent upon his relationship with God and the scriptures. Some people are weakly protected while others wear armor that renders them almost invincible.
Steven A. Cramer, “Armed With Righteousness”
When I think of wearing armor, I think of this heavy, obstructing, not very agile, slowing me down type of suit that has vulnerable spots in it. A knight wearing armor like that can still suffer fatal wounds. Albeit, there is some protection.

The armor of God is different in every way. The concept is there, it protects you, but it can do so completely without vulnerabilities. All we have to do...is wear it.
So, what is it?
It's a suit of spiritual armor we wear on the inside. It protects our soul. It has no weak spots, if wear wear all of it together. It doesn't slow us down. It's not heavy. It's a complete, perfect covering for protecting our eternal souls.
So how do we put it on?
The armor of God is as strong, as complete, in ratio to our relationship to our Heavenly Father. Meaning, if our relationship is lacking, then our armor is lacking. Therefore, we will have vulnerabilities that Satan exploits. But if we focus on God, on His Son, study His words, have faith in Him, trust Him, pray to Him, then our armor strengthens and covers every vulnerability.
The more we hear His voice, the stronger our armor is and nothing can penetrate it.
Also, keep in mind that the armor is not just defensive protection. We are promised the sword of the Spirit to fight and ensure those fiery darts never even come close to us.
