March 9, 2020 – Power of Testimony

“A testimony provides proper perspective, motivation, and a solid foundation on which to build a life of purpose and personal growth. It is a constant source of confidence, a true and faithful companion during good times and bad. A testimony provides us with a reason for hope and gladness. It helps us cultivate a spirit of optimism and happiness and enables us to rejoice in the beauties of nature. A testimony motivates us to choose the right at all times and in all circumstances. It motivates us to draw nearer to God, allowing Him to draw nearer to us.”

  1. Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “The Power of a Personal Testimony”, General Conference, October 2006

As I was talking with mom and dad (Papa and Grandma) last night, I’ve been thinking about the power of a testimony. A testimony cannot be taken from you by any man. They may take tangible things from you, even your life, but never your beliefs and testimony. They just can’t do it. Therefore, fear not what man can do.

A testimony is the one thing that is essential for us to grow and strengthen everyday. It’s a spiritual muscle, if you will, that must be exercised daily, and nourished. Just as in the mortal realm, if you don’t exercise and eat right, your physical body will not last as long as it could. Your physical life will be shortened. Well, your spiritual life will be shortened too if you don’t exercise your testimony. The only difference is Christ gave us the gift of living forever with our perfect, immortal bodies again, no matter what we’ve done to them here on earth. However, our spiritual lives, on the other hand, depend on our doing the right things.

Our testimony is already being tested. To see if we will do all things the Lord is asking of us. He is asking through His appointed prophet on this earth. We need to not just listen, but hear His words. How can we hear those words, if we aren’t listening to them?

I say this with all love and proudness (not pride per se), but also with stress and worry for everyone I love (including myself) to keep fighting. Our testimony WILL be tested in the coming days. We absolutely need them to be strong. Even friends who are right there next to us in church meetings won’t believe in what the Lord is doing. We cannot entertain ideas that are amiss or against the Lord. We need to trust that the Lord is steering this ship where it needs to go. Already, the Lord is sifting the wheat from the tares. We are beginning to see it.

Stay on the ship. Trust the Lord. Follow Him ONLY. Do not follow or fear man. Be strong. Be the light for others, especially your kids. They will rely on your light for a time, then use their own. Make it so theirs is bright and fully charged (or filled with oil) when they go off on their own. Afterall, they won’t be able to see if theirs is dim and goes out.

Lastly, be cheerful. It is stressful. It is scary. But if we are prepared, our joy will overshadow our fear. We will smile, despite the hardships. We will laugh, despite the sadness. We will triumph, despite the adversary’s foothold.
