March 28, 2020 – Trials and challenges

“Peace is not just safety or lack of war, violence, conflict, and contention. Peace comes from knowing that the Savior knows who we are and knows that we have faith in Him, love Him, and keep His commandments, even and especially amid life’s devastating trials and tragedies.”

  1. Elder Quentin L. Cook, “Personal Peace: The Reward of Righteousness”, General Conference, April 2013

We may not understand why we pass through trials and challenges in life. We may think there is something that we’re supposed to learn and then we’ll be fine and move on once we learn what we’re supposed to. Heavenly Father does not deliberately put bad things in our way. He allows them to happen, however. Could be because of our own choices or the choices of others.

The War in Heaven was fought because of Agency. Agency is vital to the Plan of Salvation. So our own choices or the choices of others have consequences that we have to deal with. That is a part of that Plan. But, the challenges we endure can also be because of the Fall, because of mortality. They may have nothing to do with choosing. And, that’s also part of the Plan.

Heavenly Father knew this obviously. He provided a way to overcome or have enough strength to endure those challenges, however they come into our lives. He sent His Son.

The refiner’s fire is hot. It hurts. It’s confusing. It’s full of anguish and sorrow, it’s devastating in many ways, but it’s necessary….if we want to grow and achieve our ultimate goal in the Plan.

One thing I try to remember often is “the truth shall set you free”, and Jesus Christ is the “way, the TRUTH, and the light”. One thing we don’t know is when we shall be free. We are promised that we will be. All we can do is stay close to the Truth.
