June 6, 2021 - Freedom

The stature of the Constitution is diminished by efforts to substitute current societal trends as the reason for its founding, instead of liberty and self-government. The authority of the Constitution is trivialized when candidates or officials ignore its principles. The dignity and force of the Constitution is reduced by those who refer to it like a loyalty test or a political slogan, instead of its lofty status as a source of authorization for and limits on government authority.

President Dallin H. Oaks, "Defending Our Divinely Inspired Constitution", General Conference, April 2021

Today is a somber and ponderative day. Today, I am thinking about what truly is important and how quickly that can be taken away, or worse, how quickly a life can be removed from this earth. We never know when today will be our last.

Today, is the 77th anniversary of the largest amphibious assault in human history. 4,415 men died this one day to make sure that our freedoms did not. 4,415!! Most of them were teenagers. Think about that. Young boys, scared, frightened, unsure of their identity in this world. They sacrificed so that we could enjoy our lives and go on oblivious, in some cases.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. - John 15:13

As liberty loving people, it is our responsibility to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is our privilege to protect this divinely inspired document from total destruction, inspired by He who is the author of freedom for every man, woman, and child.

In my mind, the laws of the land as well as the laws of God are not separate. There is no separation of church and state. There is only the Plan of Salvation. We are here for one reason, to gain a body of flesh and bones and to learn how to control it properly amidst enormous opposition. And anyone or anything that denies my right to try, to fail, to learn, and to try again is not of God.

The Constitution of the United States helps to protect those rights and we must protect it.
