[J]ust as undaunted faith has stopped the mouths of lions, made ineffective fiery flames, opened dry corridors through rivers and seas, protected against deluge and drouth, and brought heavenly manifestations at the instance of prophets, so in each of our lives faith can heal the sick, bring comfort to those who mourn, strengthen resolve against temptation, relieve from the bondage of harmful habits, lend the strength to repent and change our lives, and lead to a sure knowledge of the divinity of Jesus Christ. Indomitable faith can help us live the commandments with a willing heart and thereby bring blessings unnumbered, with peace, perfection, and exaltation in the kingdom of God."
President Spencer W. Kimball, “Faith Precedes the Miracle”, 1972
I constantly ponder this question...can one really move mountains if God doesn't want it moved? God is, of course, perfect so He has complete trust of any and all elements so they will obey and move if He desires it, or not move as it were.
Here is my thinking...
Faith in Christ is 1) having the will of Christ. It's desiring what He desires. There is only ONE truth, so if Christ (or God) doesn't want that mountain moved, you will already know that because your will is His will....in that thing. Opposing what He desires is not faith.
And 2), if your faith is strong enough, the elements have no choice but to move that mountain if you desire it because they are completely obedient to the ONE truth, which is eternal truth, which is God's truth....or His will. Think of the Brother of Jared. So the will of God, of you, and of the elements, is the same. It is in complete agreement with the laws of eternity. It is in complete alignment with the one and only perfect way of being, of existing, of "is".
The more we study and learn of Christ, the more the Spirit testifies to us of eternal truth, and then the more our faith strengthens, then the more our will aligns with God's, then the more the elements trust us to obey. I'm not saying we need to be perfect in order to move mountains. Not at all. A very tiny amount of faith will move a mountain. That just goes to show you how powerful God is if it only takes faith the size of a mustard seed for us, as mere mortals, to move mountains. Imagine what God can do. I can't even fathom it.
Since I'm not moving mountains, my faith is not yet as a mustard seed. I've got a ways to go.
"If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." - Matt 17:20
