No joy is quite as precious as that experienced by a prisoner of war who is rescued, set free from the prison camp, bathed, clothed, fed, and returned to freedom. And so it is with the prisoners of spiritual warfare, for we “also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Romans 8:21).
Steven A. Cramer, "Armed With Righteousness"
We are in awe of those captured by the enemy and thrown into prison camps and still survived that horror. We hold those prisoners in reverent admiration for their plight, their heroism, their courage, and their bravery despite their dire circumstances.
Not to belittle their suffering by any means... I was thinking also about those that are spiritually captured by the enemy? In fact, those spiritual prisoners are weighed down with chains. Imagine, if you will, a prisoner of war, so skinny, with little strength and energy, weighed down by these enormous chains, unable to hurriedly move from spot to spot, they can only stumble, even crawl. Then, imagine that same prisoner of war putting himself or herself in that situation. Why would anyone do that to himself or herself?
All of us find ourselves in that exact situation to one degree or another. And to make it worse, Satan is literally laughing at us. He thinks he's won. That alone makes me a bit angry.
And he beheld Satan; and he had a great chain in his hand, and it veiled the whole face of the earth with darkness; and he looked up and laughed, and his angels rejoiced. - Moses 7:26
There is only One means of rescue from this morbid plight we find ourselves in. Jesus Christ is the ONLY way. He will not come and get us and free us without an invitation, or a better word, "plea for help" from us to do so. He cannot.
Now imagine watching someone you love in that exact situation. So skinny and weak and crying. They are literally dying before your eyes and you can do nothing to help them. That is what Christ is feeling, only many, many times greater, and multiplied by billions for every single person, because of His perfect love for each and every one of us. He can only watch our suffering until we ask Him to come save us.
