There is a real sifting going on in the Church, and it is going to become more pronounced with the passing of time. It will sift the wheat from the tares, because we face some difficult days, the like of which we have never experienced in our lives. And those days are going to require faith and testimony and family unity, the like of which we have never had. We must prepare for the great day of the Lord. This preparation must consist of more than just casual membership in the Church. We must be guided by personal revelation and the counsel of the living prophet so that we will not be deceived.
President Ezra Taft Benson, Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, 1974
We've all heard, and even seen, that there is a sifting going on amongst believers of Jesus Christ and His Gospel. We all know others who have made poor decisions, or who have been enticed, or influenced away from that gospel, and therefore the church that teaches that gospel.
This was happening in 1974 but it has become far more frequent and "pronounced" today. I mentioned previously it can happen to the very elect even.
I plead with you who read these words...stay close to the Lord. Learn of Him. Read and study His words. Listen to Him through revelation via the Holy Ghost. Please. Don't give in to the temptations and luring and enticements employed by the adversary. His only job is to make you trip and fall.
Whereas the only purpose of our Lord is to help us gain eternal life. To keep our second estate. We already kept our first estate or we wouldn't even be here. His only purpose is us.
So, whatever cracks we have in our foundations, let's renovate and solidify them. We live in a time of earthquakes. Earthquakes, of course, shake the earth and destroy everything at the center. If a foundation is weak or has cracks, it gets destroyed. They are also definitely occurring more frequently.
Well, we also live in a time of spiritual earthquakes that are occurring more frequently too. A weak foundation will get destroyed. "The like of which we have never experienced!"
So, let's solidify and strengthen our faith and testimony, as President Benson states. But what I found interesting in what he said too is to strengthen the family unity as well. We need each other. We can't do this alone. We need each other's examples and light, at times. So, it's imperative that we keep that light burning and shining.
