23 And the end shall come, and the heaven and the earth shall be consumed and pass away, and there shall be a new heaven and a new earth.
24 For all old things shall pass away, and all things shall become new, even the heaven and the earth, and all the fulness thereof, both men and beasts, the fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea;
25 And not one hair, neither mote, shall be lost, for it is the workmanship of mine hand.
Jesus the Christ, as quoted in D&C 29:23-25
I've been thinking about the fate of this earth and whether or not mankind will suffer an extinction level event. I've been watching the show on CBS called Salvation, which is a plot that an asteroid is heading to earth and will wipe out mankind.
Many movies and shows portray this type of end-of-the-world scenario. Armageddon, for one. Deep Impact...etc. So, it got me thinking. I know that the Lord would never let His creations be subjected to this type of finality. There will be events that transpire, but nothing to the level of complete extinction of all living things.
We know that the earth was baptized by water during the great flood, to fulfill celestial glory requirements. We also know that the earth will yet be baptized by fire too. But when? How? According to the above verses, the earth will pass away.
We know that the earth will be resurrected and receive its paradisiacal glory. But we will have already been quickened (resurrected) when this happens. All of Heavenly Father's creations, including this earth, have 3 elements in common; an intelligence, a spiritual one, and a corporeal one. Therefore, all must become quickened.
We notice in the verse before this scripture, this earth quickening will happen AFTER the millennium. Therefore, Christ will usher in the millennium when He comes again. Then Michael will sound the trump that signals the resurrections BEFORE the earth shall pass away. Therefore, Heavenly Father will not let this earth be destroyed, or pass away, before its time. There may be catastrophic events take place, and some righteous souls will be caught in the middle. But.....in these cases, the Lord, in my opinion, will minimize the suffering of those righteous few. And, also....death is a gateway to a far better place, so it is not to be feared.
Bottom line, is God knows what He is doing. Far, far more than the speculation of men and women. Society will scare us, causing us to fear. But..."fear not, for you are mine" (D&C 50:41)
