January 15, 2022 - Love God

Too many people in our day are seeking to fulfill the second great commandment—to love our neighbors as ourselves—while giving but passing attention to the first. And this cannot be done. We cannot truly love and serve our fellow men and women, at least in the manner Deity has designed, unless we first learn to love God.

Robert L. Millet, “Men of Valor: The Powerful Impact of a Righteous Man”, Deseret Book 2007

For the majority of us, at least others that I've interacted with, we are genuinely good people. We don't have to be members of the church or even Christian, but we're good people.

I've thought about this a lot....is it possible to be a good person and NOT love God? I don't think so.

But there are two types of love, in this sense. One, is genuine compassion towards another (towards God, in this case) and the other is an abiding devotion towards another. I mean, people don't generally love a friend as they would a spouse... so there are two types of love.

So, people that don't know God, can't love Him with the true devotion even though they're good people. That love only comes by getting to know who He is, especially in relation to us as people on this earth. And to truly know Him, we need to know His gospel, His plan of salvation. To know that, we need to study it. Therefore, to truly love Him, we need to know what He's said to His children, ancient and modern through study (and prayer).

That's how we obey the first great commandment.
