February 5, 2021 - Should I jump? Or not?

The principle of preparation applies to everyone. We are all children of a Heavenly Father who has sent us to earth with the invitation to prepare for eternal life. Every choice, every experience, every repentance and reformation, prepares us for what is to come. Remembering that important truth will guide our choices and inform our evaluation of where we have been and where we are going.

President Dallin H. Oaks, "Life's Lessons Learned"

We are a complete sum of everything we've experienced, every action we have taken, and every thought we have had, leading up to this exact moment. One of my favorite books is "As A Man Thinketh" by James Allen. He talks about how our thoughts define who we are, therefore, every single thought gets added up and that sum is who we are now, what our character is.

I used to think that really only the big choices I make really matter, that they are the ones, really, that make a difference. Like jumping off a cliff.... that will change my life for sure. Or, taking a certain narcotic for kicks, will change my life for sure too, etc., etc.

But, the truth is, even the small, seemingly insignificant choices end up directing my life in a certain direction. A direction that I may or may not want to be going. Choices like eating a certain food, or saying a certain word, or watching a certain movie...or deciding if I need to pray, or read the scriptures, or pay tithing, or go to church.

Everything we do, consciously or out of habit, is preparing us for a certain reward (or punishment as it were). So, I'm trying to be more mindful of the small and simple choices I make in life, no matter how unimportant I think they are at thd time. My most difficult one is the wrestle I have with my pillow and whether I need to get up. 😬
