December 8, 2020 - Focus on Him

As conflicts between nations escalate, as cowardly terrorists prey on the innocent, and as corruption in everything from business to government becomes increasingly commonplace, what can help us?
Life is filled with detours and dead ends, trials and challenges of every kind. Each of us has likely had times when distress, anguish, and despair almost consumed us. Yet we are here to have joy?
Yes! The answer is a resounding yes!
That’s it! Saints can be happy under every circumstance. We can feel joy even while having a bad day, a bad week, or even a bad year!
My dear brothers and sisters, the joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.

President Russell M. Nelson, "Joy and Spiritual Survival", General Conference, October 2016

It seems like the majority of my thoughts are centered around the negative. Around the bad things that happen to me and to us, and the different challenges we face. But then I think, "well, that's the whole point of this mortal probation".

We are here on earth to face difficulty. We are here to learn to fight through that difficulty. Difficult things enter into our lives, one after the other, and sometimes more than one at the same time.

But the purpose of this test on earth is two fold:

One, is that we learn to submit our physical bodies to our spiritual bodies. Our spiritual selves need to be in control at all times. And that's hard to do, especially given the natural man, mortal tendencies we all have as well as Satan's minions all around us. We are attacked constantly and continuously from all angles.

Two, we are here to learn that despite those things we go through constantly and continously and our mortal tendencies, we are to have joy. We are to be happy.

We know the formula for overcoming difficult things while being happy as we fight through those things. There is only one Solution. His title is the Christ. He is Jesus of Nazareth. The Firstborn of Father's children. The only begotten of the Father in the flesh. Our Brother. Our Savior. My Savior. He provided me the way. He provided you the way.

This season, we focus our lives around Him. His birth. His life. His sacrifice. May we ALWAYS focus our lives around Him. All year long. Every year. Every day. Every hour. Yeah, every minute.
