With so much of sophistry that is passed off as truth, with so much of deception concerning standards and values, with so much of allurement and enticement to take on the slow stain of the world, we have felt to warn and forewarn. In furtherance of this we of the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles now issue a proclamation to the Church and to the world as a declaration and reaffirmation of standards, doctrines, and practices relative to the family which the prophets, seers, and revelators of this church have repeatedly stated throughout its history.
President Gordon B. Hinckley, "Stand Strong against the Wiles of the World", General Conference, October 1995
Now, perhaps more than ever, it is imperative that we hold the family unit together.
It is very interesting that President Hinckley used the words "warn and forewarn" with this declaration. We've already seen the decline in the family unit. So Satan is progressing in that work. Perhaps that is what President Hinckley was warning about.
Perhaps not though. Maybe he was warning about the further decline in family and standards, which may culminate into no longer existing, in general, at some future time. Or, maybe he was warning about a future event, as in singular. Or, he was warning of a series of events yet to take place.
Regardless of what happens or what is already happening, it has never been more imperative that we stand strong. We can no longer be quiet about what we believe. We can no longer sit in the shadows, mind our business, and be silent. This degradation is affecting us. The world needs light. They need examples of good. They need standards of truth. No unhallowed hand can stop the truth. So, let's be aligned with it.
