August 24, 2020 - Always On Guard

Although we need not fear, we are to be on guard. At times, little things can upend our spiritual balance. Please don’t allow your questions, the insults of others, faithless friends, or unfortunate mistakes and disappointments to turn you away from the sweet, pure, and soul-satisfying blessings that come from the precious fruit of the tree. Keep your eyes and your hearts centered on the Savior Jesus Christ and the eternal joy that comes only through Him.

Elder Neil L. Andersen, "Fruit", General Conference, October 2019

As we look out into the world, it's hard not to be afraid. If all I had to worry about was myself, it would be easier. But we all have spouses, and children, and our children's children, and loved ones, and close friends, and so on. We all have something to worry about. And something to worry about. And that introduces us to fear.

A couple of thoughts on this quote came to mind. First, we should fear not, but we do. Life can be scary. The world is scary, more so than before. I'm reminded of that D&C verse that says "look unto me in every thought, doubt not, fear not" (D&C 6:36). The more we look unto Christ, the less we will fear. Doesn't mean we won't fear at all, but we will fear less. Because we will be more spiritually prepared, so we shall not fear, as much.

Secondly, I want to stress the importance of never letting down your guard. We are ALWAYS to be watchful and diligent. I know how easy it is to relax and then Satan pushes his way in. As I said in my other thought, once we extend that toe across the line, he grabs it and pulls. But I've also learned that just because we are on the wrong side of the line, even a smidge, doesn't mean we can't get back.

There are many things out there in the world, from temptation to someone spewing untruths (and quite convingly too), and these things will make you want to step over, even to investigate. Keep your guard up. Don't be seduced by those things. Satan says and does anything and everything to get you to drop your guard. And a huge majority of society is under his spell.

"Look unto me in every tought"! This means, listen to His word through the scriptures and the prophet today. Pray. Fast. Trust. Keep watch. And our fears will be lessened.
